The short answer
Sod installation gives you a full lawn in a day instead of a season of seeding. The base preparation decides whether it survives, so we strip the old turf, grade, spread fresh topsoil and lay the sod within 24 hours of delivery, then set your watering schedule.
Sod is the only way to go from bare dirt to a green lawn in a single day, and it earns its price on new builds, front yards for sale, and lawns too far gone to renovate. But the rolls themselves are the easy part. Whether sod thrives or dies is decided before it arrives, in the preparation of the base it lands on, and in the two weeks of watering after it goes down.
How we install sod
- We strip and grade first. The old turf and weeds come out completely, and the ground is graded so water drains away from the house instead of pooling against the foundation.
- We build a real base. A layer of fresh topsoil goes over the compacted clay that sits under most Oshawa yards, because sod rooted into loose soil survives its first summer and sod sitting on hardpan does not.
- We lay it fresh, brick-style. Sod goes down within 24 hours of delivery, before the rolls heat up and dry out, with joints staggered like brickwork and seams butted tight so the edges do not brown.
- We roll and water it in. A roller presses the sod into full contact with the soil, air pockets are the enemy of rooting, and the first deep watering happens before we leave, with a day-by-day schedule for the two weeks after.
When sod can go down in Durham Region
Spring through fall, provided someone waters it. Spring and early fall are the friendliest windows, because cool nights and regular rain take pressure off the hose. Midsummer installs are done all the time, but July heat turns missed waterings into dead corners within days, so we suggest avoiding the peak of summer when the schedule allows. Late fall sod still roots enough to overwinter if it is down a few weeks before freeze-up.
Why new sod fails
Almost never because of the sod itself. It fails because it was unrolled onto hard clay with nothing to root into, because it sat stacked on a pallet for days and yellowed from the inside out, or because the watering stopped the moment it looked green. Each of those is a preparation or follow-through problem, which is exactly the part we control.

When can sod be laid in Ontario?
Spring through fall, as long as it gets watered. Spring and early fall are the easiest windows because the weather does some of the watering for you. Midsummer installs work too, but the daily watering becomes non-negotiable in the heat.
How long until I can walk on new sod?
Keep foot traffic off for the first 2 to 3 weeks while the roots knit into the soil below. When you tug a corner and it resists coming up, the sod has rooted and normal use can resume.
How much water does new sod need?
Daily watering for the first 2 weeks, enough that the soil under the sod stays moist, not just the sod itself. After that, taper to deeper, less frequent watering so the roots keep growing down.
Why does some sod fail?
Three ways, usually: it was laid straight onto hard clay with no fresh topsoil, it sat rolled up too long before installation and cooked, or it dried out in the first couple of weeks. All three are preventable.
Should I choose sod or seed?
Sod gives a usable lawn in weeks and holds soil on slopes immediately. Seeding costs less and offers more choice of grass blends, but takes a full season of care to match. For small dead spots rather than whole areas, a patch repair is usually the better buy.
